I’ll never forget the first time I heard a Meredith guitar. I was walking around one year at IBMA jamming with some friends, and a guy walked up to me and said that he wanted me to try one of his guitars. At the time, my personal guitar was the best guitar I had ever played. After about ten seconds of playing that blue maple Meredith he handed me, my opinion of my guitar changed. I knew I had to have a Meredith. Not only was Tooter’s Meredith the best guitar I had ever had in my hands, but he was one of the nicest and most humble men I had ever met.
At SPBGMA, a few months later, I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase one of Tooter’s Guitars. It was maple, like his blue guitar, and had flat black hardware. That guitar was, and still is, a CANNON!!! In October of 2007, Doyle Lawson hired me to play in his band, Quicksilver. Doyle’s quote was “That’s the best dobro I’ve ever heard!!!” To me, those were pretty strong words.
Just when I thought Tooter had it down, he shocked me again. I was jamming with my dear friend Randy Kohrs at IBMA, and he asked me if I had played the koa Meredith at the Elderly booth. I went straight down there and played a guitar that I knew was for me. Of course, it sold immediately, and I didn’t get the chance to get it. I called Tooter, and he graciously informed me about the koa wood he used in that guitar, how long he waited for it, and that he had saved his favorite pieces for a special occasion. I talked him into letting me be that special occasion.
I am still touring with Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and every where I go, I carry a koa and a maple Meredith Guitar. In my opinion, there is nothing being made, or that has ever been made, that can touch one of Tooter’s Guitars. As a musician, I can tell you that the better the instrument you play, the more you’re inspired to play. Therefore, you learn new things. I owe the way I play to my maple Meredith that inspired me to do things that I would have never done without it. Thank you Tooter!
